KEEPING IT LEGAL: WOMEN AND SHARIA LAW

        There is concern in the Arab world that the hated George W. Bush will not permit the imposition of Islamic Sharia law as the governing legal system in Iraq. The Saudi newspaper Arab News inveighs: "...The Shariah, the laws that govern Muslims, is divinely ordained. Iraq’s 25-member Governing Council wants to do nothing less, but also nothing more, than have Shariah be the law of the land in Iraq. But US President George Bush and his man in Iraq, Paul Bremer, say no. “Our position is clear,” Bremer announced. The Shariah “can’t be law” in Iraq “until I sign it.”And chances of that happening appear slim. The West believes that victors not only get the spoils of war, but get to author new laws of the land as well..." The author of the article is especially offended by our Western insistence that the rights of women not be taken away via Shariah law. Sarah Whalen, described as an "expert in Islamic law", writes: "... the Bush administration seeks to defeat the Shariah’s reception into Iraqi law by manipulating the very heart of Muslim society — its family life, and its women..."

        "...the wisdom underlying the permission granted by Shariah to copulate with a slave woman is as follows: The LEGAL possession that a Muslim receives over a slave woman from the "Ameerul-Mu'mineen" (the Islamic Head of State) gives him legal credence to have coition with the slave woman in his possession, just as the marriage ceremony gives him legal credence to have coition with his wife. In other words, this LEGAL POSSESSION is, in effect, a SUBSTITUTE of the MARRIAGE CEREMONY. A free woman cannot be 'possessed', bought or sold like other possessions; therefore Shariah instituted a 'marriage ceremony' in which affirmation and consent takes place, which gives a man the right to copulate with her. On the other hand, a slave girl can be possessed and even bought and sold, thus, this right of possession, substituting as a marriage ceremony, entitles the owner to copulate with her. A similar example can be found in the slaughtering of animals; that after a formal slaughtering process, in which the words, "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" are recited, goats, cows, etc.; become "Halaal" and lawful for consumption, whereas fish becomes "Halaal" merely through 'possession' which substitutes for the slaughtering.
        In other words, just as legal possession of a fish that has been fished out of the water, makes it Halaal for human consumption without the initiation of a formal slaughtering process; similarly legal possession of a slave woman made her Halaal for the purpose of coition with her owner without the initiation of a formal marriage ceremony..."

The silence of Western feminists on the treatment of women under Sharia law is deafening. It is evidence for the power of hatred--the shared hatred of George W. Bush--to override even self interest. Better that women live under Sharia law, than that George W. Bush be supported in his endeavour to change the Arab world.

You'd think that forced sexual slavery would bring the feminists charging out of their lairs with torches and pitchforks. However, as no Republicans were involved, it doesn't appear to interest them.

The Left's proudest boasts have always been about their opposition to slavery and exploitation. Apparently, those sentiments take a back seat to the imperative never, ever to criticize nor question any force that opposes America or American interests.

This is "the politics of against-ness." Leftists are no longer for anything; they're simply against freedom, against capitalism, against private property, against the existence of unpoliticized realms of thought, speech, and action, and of course against the United States.

What has happened is that Big Liberalism has gone off the deep end of multiculturalism. Liberals used to have core beliefs such as confidence that Judeo-Christianity (or our heritiage of Biblical Ethical Monotheism) was a good and healthful influence. Few if any denied the basic moral code and if sects had their doctrinal differences -sometime murderously so- core values like marriage, the traditional family -as defined by Western Civilization and human dignity were considered to be moral absolutes that no rational person even questioned.

Those who lived beyond the pale were considered "perverts' or "barbaric" and our ancestors had no qualms about judging Islam vis-a-vis slavery and human rights. The Islamic position concerning women, concerning liberty, concerning slavery was considered primitive and barbaric and in violation of Natural Law.

Liberalism was, previously, all about LIBERTY and human rights.

Now of course what passes for Liberalism in the USA is something that would be unrecognizable to Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, or Truman but not LBJ who knew not it seemd concept of limited government. I recall when LBJ was in Vietnam on an army base instead of walking toward Air Force One he began walking toward another helicopter. A young soldier said, "Mr. President, your helicopter is over there." LBJ answered , "Hell, son, they are ALL MINE." This really expressed LBJ's concept of the Federal Government: EVERYTHING WAS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT's BUSINSS. To LBJ and many politicians public money and public regulation is the way to monopolize political power. Fortunately we still have a quasi-private sector but do the people have any recourse against legislating judges and spendaholic polticians. The Jury is still out. We used to be a governement of the people, by the people and for the people but now we are, apparently, a government of FOUR PEOPLE.

Modern day "secular" liberalism has little respect for the private domain or persoanal freedom. Even the Lockean tolerance of priviate religions seems to be eroding. "Group rights" and "special quotas and categories" are eroding the concept of EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW as well as the ancient Judeo-Christian sense of individual rights, and responsiblity.

Too many of us adore the state (Caesar) and make the Constitution an idol or rather Constitutional LAW as an idol (as revised and interpeted freely by a liberal elite). I say, however, if we are not a nation UNDER GOD, if the Constitution ignores the good faith of the Declaration then we are a nation in which there is still slavery. I would argue that without the Declaration and without the Bible we would still have slavery and neither the poor nor women would have the franchise. We have almost completely sawed off the Bible and our Judeo-Christian heritage and by doing so we have weakened the essential pillar of our constitution. And by constitution I mean our traditions, customs and values not merely the written constitution. The British are right when they define constitution more broadly than most Americans. But even our written constitutional tradition is based on common law, traditions and precedents are not merely landmark decisions but also conventions and customs based on LONG PRACTICE, i.e. tradition.

It would be too much to ask my Jewish friends to worship the Greco-Roman-Judeo Christ as Messiah but one thing we can agree on is that we must HAVE REVERENCE UNTO GOD, the GOD OF ABRAHAM and his moral codes.

Jesus of Nazareth was of that tradition too, and historically, his sect was not Christianity at all (a word almost certainly not heard or used by Jesus himself of ANY of his immediate followers).

Jesus was Jewish and merely radical in the belief that gentiles and mixed families (there must have been many in the Greco-Roman world) must be allowed to have a place at the table. As history has proved Jewish-Christians and Jews, tragically, could not coexist in the same temples, particularly in an age that did not allow for individual diversity of beliefs. Hence the inevitable alienation and division of these sister relgions.

I think people forget the context of the Gospel. I understand tradition. To the Orthodox, to the observant Jews, the teachings of Jesus, if accepted by all Jews, would mean the sublimination of Jewish law, culture and tradition to something else RELATED to Judaism and INFLUENCED by Judaism but something completely different.

But of course in the teachings of Judaism is the seed of the belief in the Messiah. The fundamental argument between Christian and Jews and Moslems as well about Jesus is his role in history. Was he merely a popular prophet-teacher-philosopher greater than Moses but lesser than Mohammed? Of was he a charasmatic messianic rabbi who believed with all his soul and all his mind that for knowledge of God to survive it could not be a monopoly of God's chosen people alone?

Looking back at history Jews have been tormented and persecuted alternatively by Romans, by Christians and Moslems but if we look at the history Jews have survived ultimately because of the growth of varieties of ethical monotheism that spread societies that were in awe of the Jews. Even when there was hatred for Jews, there was always -there had to be- much awe for the Jews. For after all these were the kindred of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mary and Joseph.

Man or God-inspired man or Son of God? As a Christian in the Roman Catholic tradition I know what the answer is or at least what the answer is SUPPOSED TO BE. But as a thinking man I know that the true nature of Jesus just as the true nature of God will be ever a mystery. Only by our fruits will we know if what we do and what we believe is good and true. We must be humble to know that we are not perfectable and that not all can be known. But here endth the essay for duty calls....AP tutoring of the huddled masses yearning to breathe free Saturday morning....as in the Settlement Houses of old...yes....my tutoring is unpaid....

Ruth King has a point the Feminist and Gay Movement both have much in common they are essentially narcissistic and selfish movement with little or no regard for the common good (or the good of families and children).

Children must be protected and nutured because they are the future. Our cult of childlessness and of Sangerism may doom us yet.

The day may come when only the Koran is read in Paris, Oxford, Munich and even Rome. New York would follow soon after.

Oh yes, multiculturalism and feminism will have been totally exterminated by such people.

Please note I can peacefully coexist with feminism and an intelligent multiculturalism though I won't go so far as to say some of my best friends are radical feminists. I am, personally, a cosmopolitan man with friends and acquaintences from many creeds, languages and races.

Like many American men of my generation I have voted with my feet and heart and married a non-English speaking traditionalist who is, thank God, only vaguely aware Susan B. Anthony, Margaret Sanger and Betty Freidan exist or have existed. She thinks being called "bonnie", "woman of the house", "wifie ' mine, "my wee girl" and a "lassie" and a "lady" is charming and proof of my devotion. Mrs. Munro is a very lady like and her small mouth knows not evil blasphemies and hateful lies though she is strong willed and like the Steel of Castile.

The BVM, Mother Teresa, Julia Ward Howe, St. Elizabeth Beaton and the songs of Sarita Montiel are more her style. We were married on the Feast Day of St. Columba and Lent, Easter and St. Patrick's Day are happy times at the Munro household without discord.

This is why my personal life is tranquil and surrounded by love and harmony and lovely legions of children, nieces and nephews. The meek (the "pair" -poor and plain folk) will inherit the earth.
Believe me I am glad just to have survived the 20th century.

An intelligent feminist would thank God for immigrant Hispanic youth, southerners, Evangelical protestants, Mormons and Catholics with large families.

Who do you think is in the Marines and 4th ID??? Not the feminist club of Columbia U or Harvard or Yale nor even, I dare say the "manly" elite of the Ivy League who have avoided military service like the plague since 1969. Far easier to have mercenaries do the trick.

But the supply of pro-Western mercenaries is drying up particualrly in Western Europe thanks to the Sangerites and our cult of childlessness.

I won't live to see it but our Manzikert will come and when the first Marines go down and when there are no Reserves left...God help us all.

Like I said I will never live to see it but I dread even to contemplate such a future. The 21st century will be a decisive one for Western Civilization and we are in for the fight of the millenium and many still don't get it. Today Israel, tomorrow, Europe and then finally the Great Satan, the USA. Bin Laden and his ilk will stop at nothing and know time is on their side.
