Rita I empathize with what you feel and personally have experienced the intense almost frightening but certainly disturbing anti-Semitism of the French left. You won't get any argument about French pro-Nazi collaboration from me.
And you are probably right the French don't care about French Jews (or Israel for that matter).

However -and this should be no surprise- I did not see extreme physical charactures of Jews in the Passion.

The character of Mary, for example, was a handsome but not glamorous woman, who IS Jewish (Maya Morgenstern) and people wondered what Italian actress was she.

If the film had one flaw it reminded me of an Italian western or WWII movie with small statured Italians pretending to be German supermen or Far West pistoleros from Tennessee. The cast looked like a family gathering from Reggio Calabria more than Israel but one must suspend disbelief with such things just as one must accept Gary Cooper as a lefthanded slugger in PRIDE of the YANKEES (he made Phil Linz or Ron Swoboda look like Babe Ruth it was so unbelievable to be laughable).

But one must not make too much of that. Actually the physically types of Jews were quite diverse in the film though not unrealistic. In many films Simon of Cyrene has been depicted as a black African -when in fact he was probably -no one really knows- a Hellenistic Jew.

In this film Simon was depicted quite sympathetically and as a very robust, honorable and very obviously JEWISH man. This is anti-semitism? Simon was shown as a Jew who DID NOT sympathize with Jesus of his teachings but who was originally disgusted by the whole affair but nevertheless showed great humanity towards Jesus.

A Roman soldier displays anti-Semitic hatred towards Simon -calling him JUDEUS (a Jew) and this Roman was not depicted in a favorable light at all.

In fact, if anything the Roman soldiery were shown to be indisciplined and the sadistic dregs of humanity far worse than any Jew in the film. The "Satanic" devil character appears as much among the Romans as among the Jews and of course next to Judas and Jesus.

To me the message was clear that evil -our evil human nature - is ALWAYS near and within all of us. Me and you and everyone. This was the point, I believe, that Mel Gibson wanted to make just as he wanted to make it clear that the Jews were not responsible for Jesus's death but ALL HUMANITY bears the guilt. Gibson's own hand appears in the film and holds the nail that is driven in the hand of the man who is considered by many millions to be the Greatest Lawgiver and Greatest teacher this world has ever known.

And this man was a Jew and the son of a Jewish woman and all his relations as far as we know were Jewish as well. Jesus, I am convinced, the Son of Mary, I feel quite certain, and Mary herself would have denounced hatred, prejudice and persecution of the Jews and indeed be surprised and horrified by such acts being done in his or her name.

The Passion was not a pro-Roman film but a film that depicted the dark side of the Roman character quite accurately.

You may not realize this but to Celts the Romans of the classical period were our destroyers. I am an American by choice but quite aware and quite close to my Celtic roots as my immediate ancestors were not Americans nor English-speakers but survivors who lived on the fringe of the English-speaking world in the remote Highlands and Islands only emerging in the modern world really in the early 20th century.

The Romans far more than the English who are Anglo-Celtic after all were the enemies of the Celt and virtually annihilated Celtic culture and society.

Not a single critic that I know of pointed this out but this had to have been in the back of the mind of Mel Columcille Gibson, who is quite aware of his Gaelic heritage. The Passion was a very anti-Roman Empire film. I don't think people appreciated this. It was also an anti-elite film. I didn't think of the High Priests as Jews or representing all Jews. I saw them as a self-interested smug faction -collaborators with the Romans- who wanted to preserve their power and their influence and their own cushy life styles.

The elite "maledom" of the time Pilate, Peter and the SOME of Jewish High Priests -not all- were shown to be weak, selfish and cowardly. Instead And that is not even mentioning the characterization of Judas Iscariot who was depicted quite literally as having sold his soul to the devil and why? This remains and forever remains a mystery. Was it because he felt Jesus a blasphemer? Was it because Jesus wasn't nationalist and militarist enough to lead a popular revolt against the hated Roman conquerors?
We will never, I think, in this life, understand the true motivation of Judas -he may not have fully understood himself.

The women characters both Jewish and Roman (Claudia) were the most appealing and most courageous people in the film.

I have been busy with my taxes, editing a play and my quarter grades so I have not written my serious review for Stephen on the Passion (which I hope to do next week when I have what is still sotto voce called EASTER BREAK in Kern County though officially it is Easter Break due to fear of an ACLU outbreak).

I will say now and for all the world to see that I have seen the PASSION OF THE CHRIST twice and thought it was a masterpiece of cinema. I found it visually memorable, thought provoking, splendidly played and spellbinding. Each time I saw the film it was as if I were transferred to another time and place and I was completely unaware of the passing of time. Before I knew it the film sped to its close. Like many others I was left hungry more -not more torture and humiliation- but the REST of the story and the teachings of Jesus and his disciples.

Rarely have I been so moved by a film. I thought the approach was very fresh and vigorous. It was easily 100 times better than George Steven's workman-like but sanitized THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. I would not and did not take my 12 year old daughter to see the film ( I would not let my 11 year old son see BRAVEHEART with me either) but my 14 year old daughter and my 19 year old son saw the film TWICE (as did I). Mel Gibson will be remembered for this film and others as one of the greatest filmakers in American and cinematic history.

But Rita, having said this, I ask you, is it fair to compare Mel Gibson's PASSION OF THE CHRIST to a Nazi era anti-Semtic propaganda of 1941 occupied Paris?

I don't think so.

George Orwell was probably right when he said -he was thinking of Father Coughlin and others- that anti-semitism comes "more naturally to people of a Conservative tendency...political Catholics are always liable to succumb to antisemitism, at least intermittently." I am aware of that but I am unafraid to speak my mind because I think one must speak the truth as one sees it.

I cannot speak for Mel Gibson nor do I wish to appear as his apologist but I can say that few American Catholics and even fewer Evangelical protestants in my acquaintence are anti-Semitic or anti-Israeli.

Quite the contrary.

Outside of the Jewish-American community you will find no groups more SYMPATHETIC towards Jews and Israel more so in fact that many liberal Jews.

In fact the most suprising phenomenon to me is to see secular Jews of the Left be so anti-Bush who is obviously pro-Israeli.

It does not surprise me, however, that my acquaintences and relatives (by marriage) IN EUROPE are very lukewarm to say the least towards Israel.

These same people are Europacifists and tilt towards anti-Americanism as well.

One can be concerned about the possiblity of violence against Jews for any reason. Today we saw great violence against American civilians -I don't know their national origins or religion but they were fellow Americans and unarmed. Their bodies were mutilated and dragged throught the streets as locals smiled and cheered. I thought, "Is this humanity?". They may have thought to scare people like me but instead it fills me -an many of my countryman with a steely resolve to finish the job. Not out of revenge. Not because we want power or glory but because evil-doers cannot be allowed to run amok in a civilized world. They must be restrained, disarmed, captured or if nothing else works eliminated. The Free world has a right to defend itself from fanatical killers.

I personally have defended Jews and Israel against Palestinians whom I have met in France, Spain, Italy and the USA. I have always defended Isreal's right to self-defense and unlike many Euro-appeasers I do not blame to Jews for all the world's problems and the so-called "oppression' of the so-called Palestinian people.

But if we want anti-Semitism, real anti-semitism let's not look at Mel Gibson's movie making but at shrill Islamofascist rhetoric. THEY ARE THE DANGER. THEY ARE THE HATERS. THEY ARE THE JIHADISTS and THEY ARE THE KILLERS. The people who cheer Mel Gibson are the stalwart friends of the Jewish people and the Jewish homeland. It is their sons who are the 'boots on the ground'. I know quite a few of them personally and I relate with grief I have had to attend local funerals of soldiers, aid workers and missionaries from Bakersfield and Kern county. They believed in freedom, duty, honor and country and they gave the ultimate sacrifice so that peace and freedom for all might have a fighting chance in that bedeviled land raging with hatred towards the Jews and anyone who befriends the Jews.

I know there are many old hurts and many bad memories and much to atone for. As I have written to Diane, our friend, your friend, on more than one occasion, that if every Christian who married a Jew- converted to Judaism for 10,000 years and raised their children in the Jewish faith it could not atone for the crimes against the Jewish people of the 20th century alone let alone 19 centuries.

We are living in dangerous times and already there are whispers that if we would "only let Israel go" all our problems will be over. I have said before and I will say it again that if we double cross a democracy for the sake of peace -that is the truth of appeasement- as we did in 1938 and by we I mean the Western Democracies then we will get terrorism and war more terrible and more prolonged than ever has been known. I often think in fact, in the dark stilly night, that we could be living on the edge of an abyss, that new dark age "made more sinister by the lights of perverted science."

But in this fight I think Mel Gibson is on our side not on the side of the French and all the Euroappeasers.
