REALLY? AND SANDY BERGER WAS JUST PRACTICING THE HIDDEN BALL TRICK
BOSTON - John Kerry bounced the ceremonial first pitch during last night's Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway Park, but he said he was just going easy on the National Guard soldier and Iraq war veteran standing in as catcher.
"I held back," Mr. Kerry told reporters early this morning, on the plane ride after the game. "He was very nervous. I tried to lob it gently."

"I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower -- the TV was obviously on. And I used to fly, myself, and I said, well, there's one terrible pilot. I said, it must have been a horrible accident."
- Pres. Bush's claim of how he first learned about the attacks on 9/11 (see this link at the White House)
There was of course no footage of the 1st plane hitting at that point. (The 9/11 Commission says they were briefed by Karl Rove before going into the classroom, and that Rove said it was a twin engine plane. I think it's around page 35 of the hard copy.) And he heard about the second plane through Andrew Card, while in the classroom.
Of course, Horsefeathers will never suggest that anyone but Democrats play with the truth.
So there you go: Bush lies and lies and lies.
Posted by: Frank at July 26, 2004 06:13 PM
And how come none of the democrats showed up to work that day>?
Posted by: Walter E. Wallis at July 26, 2004 07:16 PM
How exactly does bouncing a ball in front of a catcher make it easier?
At least he didn't blame Bush.
"I was nervous because of that liar Bush!"
"I was distracted thinking about what a liar Bush is."
"Bush moved the plate farther back when I wasn't looking. That liar!"
"Bush sustituted a lead ball when I was distracted by his lies."
"I didn't throw that pitch!! BUSH did, that liar!"
"I'm not even John Kerry! BUSH is. That liar!"
Posted by: Martin Kozloff at July 26, 2004 07:19 PM
What - no I voted for the fastball before I voted for bouncing the 56 ft curveball in dirt? No, calling the Iraqi War Veteran a SOB for not stopping the wild pitch and keeping it from bouncing to the backstop and embarassing the Senator?

The other wonderfully revealing moment was when Kerry was interviewed and asked whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame. He ventured no opinion; "That's a tough one", said Kerry--a veritable profile in courage-- adding, he'd leave it up to the baseball writers.
Posted by: Stephen at July 26, 2004 07:58 PM
"Profile in courage..."
Kerry is more of a profile in custard.
[Makes no sense at all, but moderately amusing--possibly because it makes no sense at all--kinda like Kerry.]

Based on the comments which have followed mine — none of which recognized that Bush fibs too — it seems many of you are ignoring a basic truth here. Kerry may fib on inconsequential stuff, while Bush fibs on history.
You're just going to have come to grips with whomever is President in Feb. 2005.

JFKerry fibs on inconsequential stuff - - but Pres Bush fibs on history?
Examples would be needed to support a grenade toss like that.....
Posted by: Athos at July 27, 2004 04:15 PM
Athos, I just provided a case where Bush fibbed on history, when he claimed to an audience that he'd seen the first plane hit (on television) while waiting to go into the classroom at Booker Elementary. Impossible, of course, since no footage of the first jet crashing into the WTC was available at that point.
Here's another: when he claimed he'd done more for human rights than any other President. (Forgetting Lincoln and FDR, of course.)
Here's another: througout 2001 he claimed that he had said while campaigning in Chicago in 2000 that he'd only run deficits if we were at war, at time of crisis, and I can't forget the third condition. He said this repeatedly, and it's neber been found.
In addition, he's also lied about the future: while campaigning in 2000 he claimed that in his tax decrease plan "by far" the greatest portion of the dollars would go to those in the bottom half of earners.
Now, I could add others. How about if you provide a consequential fib by Kerry?

The quote on the airline is "And my Chief of Staff, Andy Card -- actually, I was in a classroom talking about a reading program that works. I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower -- the TV was obviously on. And I used to fly, myself, and I said, well, there's one terrible pilot. I said, it must have been a horrible accident."
You read that and claim the President said he saw the plane hit the first tower - but others can read it and say - as I thought when I first saw the news at 5:45am Pacific - the first tower, with a large hole around the 90-95th Flr - and guessed, a plane hit the tower. I didn't have to see the flight go into the tower to believe a plane hit it - that was the only explanation for the damage visible. Really reaching.
While campaigning, the President said that his goal was to manage a government surplus, above and beyond the surpluses recorded by the Social Security system except for cases of War, Recession, and or National Emergency. Well, the President in his first budget - had to run a deficit since we were in a recession, were in a war, and in a situation of national emergency. No lie there.
I need to see the human rights quote - since I could find it via search.
OK - Kerry lies.....how about Kerry's statements in 2002 that Iraq / Saddam had WMD, and represented a threat to the US, and that the US had to take action? Then reversed himself when campaigning against Dean? or how about the Kerry lie when he said he wasn't in the anti-war meeting in Kansas City where the leadership of VVAW voted on an assassination plan of pro-war US Senators - but subsequent documents and statements prove he was there? or his joint appearance on Meet the Press with Al Hubbard in 1971 where Kerry and the NBC team introduced Hubbard as a Captain in the USAF and Vietnam Vet - when Kerry knew that Hubbard was neither or more recently - Kerry's position on homosexual marriage represented lies - and flip flops in position.
How about showing me that the tax deduction lie - in actual $$'s from actual government stats. I think that this is yet another "creative interpretation". At least with Kerry, I don't have to get creative.
Look forward to seeing a campaign ad at some point this year where Kerry debates himself - based on his flip flops.

Hi Athos...
For lots of info on Bush and tax cuts, see this and this. These are not government-reported figures however: I looked on gvt web sites, and it doesn't look like they want to spell it out easily.
For the lie about the trifecta, try this.
Now, I'll gladly grant that the human rights claim is more along the lines of something really stupid rather than a lie, but he said it to Ken Auletta of The New Yorker, and you can find it here.
These were not the only ones, of course. And sometimes he is literally true while intending to deceive. For instance, when he said there were no plans for invading Iraq on his desk. Literally it was true, but he keeps a clean desktop and had been briefed on war plans. (I can forgive him that -- I wouldn't want him showing the enemy the cards in his hand.) Another example was during the 2000 presidential debates when he talked about health care legislation he'd signed as governor; yet it was legislation he'd vetoed earlier and was basically forced to sign. (He has a way of getting behind issues when sufficient pressure is applied -- the dpet. of Homeland Security, the 9/11 Commission, and the WMD Intel commission, for examples.)
The Daily Howler is a good resource for some of his lies/exaggerations in 2000, because one of their major beefs is that Gore was put under a microscope about things he didn't even lie about while Bush was given free rides.

Athos, are you referring to Charles Krauthammer's invented "Bush Derangement Syndrome"?
Posted by: Frank at July 28, 2004 07:05 PM
It's called an "ad hominem attack."
Here, I'll use it in a sentence.
"When conservatives cannot counter an argument, they resort to ad hominem attacks."
You presented plenty of evidence of Bush deceiving the American public, and he suggested that you were being irrational.
Got it? Athos' grip on reality is too fragile to entertain your arguments, and his health demanded that he lash out at you rather than at your argument.
