THE HORSEFEATHERS' LOG

Dr. Johnson sagely observed that being aboard ship is like being in jail with the added possibility of drowning. Ignoring this wisdom Horsefeathers (Dr. YK and RK) signed on for a two week passage around the Baltic Sea. Stopping at a variety of ports of call in Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and finally sailing up the Thames to dock in central London.

What drove us to this rash and perhaps dangerous act? Well, one of us had never traveled by ship, even when ship travel was the conventional way to get across the pond. In addition, the Baltic sounded cool—thermally, not trend-wise—and the places sounded exotic. We had, for countless years, bummed around the Mediterranean—Spain, Morocco, France, Italy, Greece, and wanted a change. Furthermore, the Swan Hellenic Tours company had a good reputation for supplying a small army of boring guest lecturers from the various great faculties of the UK. There is nothing like a dull lecture on the Teutonic Knights, or the Russo-Finnish War to make one feel that he or she is doing something virtuous. Such self-improvement exercises help balance out the booze, rich wines and omnipresent fruit tartlets at lunch, tea, and dinner.

Don’t get us wrong. This is not supposed to be a Spartan student experience. We filled a lifeboat full of dollars and sent it overseas in order to have this adventure. And we’re expecting to be carried everywhere by two or three sailors and a maid and valet. Well, we’ll settle for a smile and a wake-up call in the morning.

We’ll try to report interesting observations and encounters along the way if there are any, so stand by for more fun, adventure, and calls for help….

Have fun but don't stray too far from the dingies! :)

Buy yourself some Stugeron (cinnarizine) when you arrive at your departure point (not available in the US, over the counter in Europe). It is wonderful anti-seasickness medicine that does not cause the nasty drowsiness of dramamine nor the hyper anxiousness of dramamine non-drowsy.

Of course, read the labels and contraindications before beginning any medicinal regimine. :)

Have a wonderful trip!

Have a terrific time! It's a fascinating area to visit.

The coffee everywhere west of Poland is absolutely the finest in the world. From Poland east, well, you take your chances.

Hope you get a chance to spend considerable time ashore.
