THE CASE OF WARD CHURCHILL: PROFESSORIAL EXTREMISM AND THE EXPLOSIVE POWER OF BOREDOM

Horsefeathers maintains that contemporary liberalism has devolved into little more than a pose. It has become a stance, an attitude- self flattering and insistent on its intellectual and moral superiority. Its childish utopianism, and its adolescent craving for excitement require scapegoats to explain the failure of the real world to match its longings. The Jews are the always available, anti-utopians. George Bush is the functional equivalent, for today's liberals of the universal scheming and nefarious, Jew--the dreaded Neo-Con. It should come as no surprise that leftist Amerika hater, Ward Churchill, is a Jew hater as well. Prof. Edward Alexander exposes the nature of what passes for thought in the precincts of Churchill's academic left.

"Some ideas," wrote George Orwell over half a century ago, "are so stupid that only intellectuals could believe them." The truth of this observation is daily reenforced at countless universities.
Amidst a glare of nationwide publicity, University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill has been asked to resign as chairman of that school's Ethnic Studies Department because he published an essay in which he likened the 3000 people massacred at the World Trade Center on 9/11 to "little Eichmanns." For good measure, he added that their killers had made "gallant sacrifices" to achieve noble ends. Prior to this incident, Churchill's scholarly reputation was based mainly on a squalid tract called A LITTLE MATTER OF GENOCIDE (1997), in which he argued that the murder of European Jews was not at all a "fixed policy objective of the Nazis," and accused Jews of seeking to monopolize for themselves all that beautiful Holocaust suffering that other groups would very much like, ex-post facto, to share. He argued that Jewish "exclusivism" had nearly erased from history the victims of other genocidal campaigns, and that Jewish scholars stressed the Holocaust in order to "construct a conceptual screen behind which to hide the realities of Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian population." He not only likened Jewish scholars who have argued for the unique character of the Holocaust to neo-Nazi Holocaust deniers; he said that the Jews are worse than the latter-day Nazis because "those who deny the Holocaust, after all, focus their distortion upon one target. Those [Jewish scholars] who deny all holocausts other than that of the Jews have the same effect upon many." Given the current academic atmosphere, it is a safe bet that what might delicately be called Churchill's shortage of sympathy in the Jewish direction made him a strong candidate to head Colorado's Ethnic Studies program.
Extremism is the order of the day on campus. In the aftermath of 9/11 a professor at University of New Mexico effervescently declaimed: "Anyone who can blow up the Pentagon gets my vote." An academician at University of Massachusetts told his students that "The American flag is a symbol of terrorism and death and fear and destruction and oppression."
At Columbia University, Professor Nicholas DeGenova vaulted to national renown when he declared, at an anti-war rally in March 2003, that "U.S. patriotism is inseparable from...white supremacy" and then expressed the "wish for a million Mogadishus in Iraq." (This was a reference to the 1993 incident in Somalia when eighteen U. S. troops were killed.) In June 2002 Trent University philosophy professor Michael Neumann bravely declared (in Alexander Cockburn's online publication Counterpunch) that "if an effective strategy [for promoting the Palestinian cause] means encouraging vicious, racist antisemitism or the destruction of the state of Israel, I still don't care." And Noam Chomsky, the ne plus ultra of anti-Americanism (and the person historian Arthur Schlesinger long ago, in 1969, called the consummate "intellectual crook")pontificated: "Let me repeat: the U.S. has demanded that Pakistan kill possibly millions of people..." And so on ad nauseam.
What the poverty of the English language compels me to call the 'ideas' in these professorial fulminations are pretty uniform: anti-Americanism, antisemitism, tenacious attachment to the motto: "the other country, right or wrong." The uniformity of opinion has a comic element to it: the extremist professors nearly always present themselves as brave dissenters confronted by a mob of thick-skinned louts; in fact they belong, perhaps more than any other segment of American society, to a community of CONSENT, in which "diversity" means that people look different but think exactly alike.
But what is more disturbing than the opinions uniformly expressed is the hysteria, bordering on mental imbalance, that characterizes them. People we
used to think of as harmless drudges pursuing mouldy futilites are now revealing to us the explosive power of boredom, a power that may well frighten us.

Prof. Edward Alexander is right"
"But what is more disturbing than the opinions uniformly expressed is the hysteria, bordering on mental imbalance, that characterizes them. People we used to think of as harmless drudges pursuing mouldy futilites are now revealing to us the explosive power of boredom, a power that may well frighten us."

Free speech is not an ulimited right. Free speech does not give someone the right to falsely cry "FIRE" in a crowded theatre.

I recall the case of a certain minister, one Carl J. Kunz who was once upon a time denied a permit to preach on the sideways of New York City. There was, you see, a city ordinance against holding religious services on public thoroughfares without a permit. As I understand Mr. Kunz was denied a permit because he had the curious habit of denouncing sects he did not like -chiefly Jews and Catholics- in the most obscene, inflamatory and vile language imaginable. To help keep the public peace, the city denied Mr. Kunz a permit. Of course, a man of such convictions did not take this lying down and so Mr. Kunz decided to keep on preaching his hatred and bigotry for the "Glory of God." New York's Finest pounced on him and arrested Mr. Kuntz and threw him in the pokey.

Naturally, this being America Mr. Kuntz got a lawyer who claimed Mr. Kunz' rights were violated. After all, Mr. Kunz had the right of freedom of speech did he not? And in addition to that he had his first amendment rights, guaranteed by the the 14th amendment, to his free exercise of relgion?

The court ruled for Mr. Kuntz in 1951 saying the New York City ordinance was an "unconsitutional prior restraint" (advance censorship). Justice Robert Jackson dissented and defended the restrictions because the Reverend had used "fighting words". Chapiniski vs. New Hampshire (1942) had held that "lewd and obscene, the libelous"...and "fighting words" did not have any social value in the search for truth, public order and safety. At that time the Court ordered "fighting words" outside the protections of the 1st Amendment guarantees.

The Kunz case weakened the "fighting words" doctrine so that as professor Patrick says " the only prevailing justification for restricting speech is to prevent direct, immediate, and substantial harm to a vital socail interest, such as national security, public order and the safety of individuals."

Quite right, Justice Oliver Holmes reasoned in the Schenck case (1919) that during a wartime emergency "things that might be said in time of peace are such a hindrance to its efforts that their utterance will not be...protected by constitutional right." In a time of national emergency freedom of speech is not an absolute guarantee if there is a 'clear and present danger."

I personally have felt I would have preferred for Congress to have formally declared war on somebody (not necessarily a nation) so that it would be completely clear to everyone that we are in fact "at war." We say we are at war but we treat this national emergency as if it were some minor frontier skirmish or police action.

As far as the odious, bigoted and ignorant Ward Churchill is concerned and the man is clearly an "Anti-Churchill" as well as an evil demagogue.
A few years back we could claim such outbacks of ignorance and racial bigotry, the 'ethnic studies departments' as "ethnic playpens" without any real intellectual merit and scarcely belonging to the academy. We "bought off the barbarians" by letting them in the academy and now we are paying the consequences. The question is not should the so-called professor Ward Churchill resign from being the department chair of Colorado University but should he resign or be forced to resign from teaching.

Moreover, the true issue is we, the people, should seriously consider in states like California, Massachusetts, Arizona and Colorado whether ETHNIC STUDIES DEPARTMENTS SHOULD BE EXPUNGED FROM THE UNIVERSITIES, DEFUNDED AND RECONSTITUED entirely by PUBLIC REFERENDUM AND INITIATIVE if our elected officials and the trustees of the university do nothing but appease such a villain who declares himself openly to be an enemy of the Republic in a time of war. Lucky for him this is a free country and the standard for treason is very high but historically, in most countries, his behavior besides being morally reprehensible would be treasonous. He has a right to say virtually treasonous things all he likes BUT NOT AT THE PUBLIC EXPENSE!!!

Several years ago I heard at my high school another great ethnic mavin rant and rave like a Lenin, Castro or Hitler, about chains, guns and "gabacho's" in thinly veiled separtist and revolutionary language ( in Spanish of course so that many could not fully understand but I did).

My colleagues and I took action. We presented a letter to the principal and the Superintendant questioning the educational value of such a scholar. Some of us did more. We joined the English for the Children movement to strictly curtail NENLI (Non-English Native Language Instruction aka "bilingual education") and its ideological sister "left wing romantic anti- American Anti-patriotic multiculturalism." Our opponents tried to deny us the right to be on the ballot. We defeated them. Our opponents using the vast resources of the teacher union -our union- and its Ivory Tower allies to the tunes of millions of dollars outspent us 100 to 1. Yes, when all else failed they tried to call a cadre of devoted teachers, parents, religious and reformers most of whom were Spanish-speaking, "racist", "anti-education", "anti-immigrant" and "anti-Hispanic'. I was told at public forums that I spoke for myself because my speech was "poltical". Yet down the road, at Cal State Bakersfield visiting tenured professors were PAID out of public funds to denounce the reform bill! But anything a tenured professor says is "education" , is it not?

When challenged at a public forum about my "racism" I had this to say. "In 1787 Irishman Thomas Hassett was teaching at a school in St. Augustine, Florida. He was teaching a mixed class of the children of Spanish soldiers and officials and Mission Indians. One day there were black faces at the door. Hassett addressed them in Spanish but they did not respond. Suddenly he understood; they were escaped slaves from the Carolinas. He invited them to sit among the White and Indian students of the class. It was the first integrated classroom in North America. When the comandante found out he was very unhappy. He said, "Thomas, whatever happens is on your own head! I can have nothing to do with this. You are completely on your own!"
Hassett reportedly answered, " Not entirely, Comandante! But one thing more: when I get to heaven, I will put in a good word for you." Hassett did not do what he did out for himself alone or for the school alone but for the good of all.

I have been a public school teacher for many years in the poorest district in this country. Not because i am anti-education. Not because I am anti-Hispanic. Not because i am anti-immigrant but because I am for the education of children, ALL THE CHILDREN. The students and parents of my community know this. In fact, that's why not a single former student or parent in my community has come foward to denounce me as these carpetbaggers from LA have. In fact, they have flocked to volunteer their services because they believe in the work we are doing. That alone should give good evidence why English for the Children is going to win and the proponents of Phoney Bilingualism and NENLI are going to lose.

Of course, English for the Children won an overwhelming victory with almost 2/3 of the vote and by some estimates 50% of the Hispanic vote despite an enormous effort of disinformation and propaganda.

I recall now Thomas Jefferson's statue for religious freedom (1786). I was re-reading it the other day and I essentially agree with it in its entirety as it is fair and reasonable. However, I was made to think. Jefferson said " to compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical....it is time enough for the rightful purposes of civil government, for its officers to interfere when principles break out into overt acts against peace and good order. and finally, that truth is great and will prevail if left to herself....errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them."

The real problem with the academy is that years of PC, ethnic studies departments and affirmative action quotas for offically designated "ethnic minorities" and " psuedo-minorities" (women et al ad nauseum) have created a politcal spoils system that tilts dangerously to the left as far as the universities of Nazi Germany tilted to the right after 1933. This is a clear and present danger. The people have a right to denounce such academic demagogues and charlatans. They have a right to demand equality and justice and high ethical and academic standards at their public universities. They have a right to DEFUND, DESOLVE AND RECONSITUTE colleges and universities of higher learning.

I call on the citizens of Colorado to demand the resignation of "Ward Churchill" as his racist bile and billingsgate has no place in a place of higher learning any more than incitement to rape, pornography, violence and sexual harassment has a place in the any classroom, particularly one that purports to be one of "higher education".

There is room for diversity of opinion. There is room for intelligent, informed civil dialogue. But as Justice Holmes once said, "the most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic."

Ward Churchill should be free to speak as his pleases BUT WITHOUT A DIME FROM THE PUBLIC.
Any school or university which employs him DESERVES NOT A DIME FROM THE PUBLIC. Any elected official who defends him SHOULD BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. Aye, Ward Churchill should be free to speak with every colorful, racist, anti-Semitic metaphor as he pleases while selling pencils on street corners on his soap box next to the spirt of the Rev. Kuntz.

Such puerile, anti-intellectual teachings have no intellectual, instrumental or social value at all and are not worthy of a public subsidy.

Citizens of Colorado resist this tyranny of a new state-supported established relgion called Secular Humanist Liberalism .

Resist it!

Denounce it!

if there is a limit to the forebearance of the American people THIS SHOULD BE IT!!!!

This is learning cast into the mire and trodden down under the hoofs of an arrogant new secular priesthood, public officials called "tenured professors"!

Such rubbish does not educate but MISEDUCATES.

Such rubbish does not help the common good but HARM the common good and undermine the public confidence in pubic education of all types.

CUT THEM OFF from every last cent UNTIL THE LIKES OF WARD CHURCHILL CEASE TO SULLY THE HALLS OF HIGHER LEARNING, UNDERMINE THE FREEDOM, WEAKEN THE UNITY AND STAIN THE HONOR OF THE FLAG OF THIS GREAT REPUBLIC.

" People crushed by law have no hopes but from power. If laws are their enemies, they will be enemies to the law....if any ask me what free government is, I answer,...it is what the people think..." Edmund Burke
