CALLING TOM FRIEDMAN: THE NAME IS W.
Tom Friedman may smugly compliment himself on his knowledge of pop culture and cite his globe trotting acquaintance with Saudi potentates, but here's word from inside the belly of the totalitarian beast, Egypt. Guess who is gratefully acknowledged? The dumb cowboy himself!

Earthquake in Egypt!!
I never imagined what President Mubarak said today. He asked the parliament to amend the Egyptian constitution to allow multiple candidates to run for the presidency. This means that Muabark will have opponents running against him.
Now, I am not stupid nor am I living in la la land. Mubarak's decision today came after immense pressure from the US and the current earthquakes (the purple revolution in Iraq and the Hariri revolution in Lebanon) that shook the region days ago. However, I credit US pressure as the number one reason. Condoleezza Rice cancelled a trip to Egypt scheduled for next week because of the arrest of Ayman Nour and Mubarak's failure to "change". Well, it seems that Bush turned out to be bloody serious about this democracy in the Middle East thing. It also seems that Bushie will in fact make it to the history books that my grandchildren will be reading at school 50 years from today. If Syria or Iran fell, Bush can rest assured that he will add his name to the Lincoln-Wilson-Roosevelt-Reagan quartet.

We don't want to go over the top in our praise for Ole W. Remember when JFK was compared to Lincoln, TR, FDR and the Pope John xxiii?
We still have a long way to go. But his big stick and his military are making quite a mark.
But the early innings, as I have written before, seem to put him in the class presidents with a successful foreign policy, Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Polk, Lincoln, TR, Wilson maybe , FDR, Truman, Ike.
History will be the final Judge but Ole W is showing character and courage...something they could use at Columbia and Harvard but what can you expect from a bunch of shirkers with no ROTC programs?'
Every day I see men and women in uniform...this is UVA and we have 700 officer candidates. Do the math. 700 times 36 years. Is that how much better UVA is than Harvard? At least in some things. Manly things. Patriotic things. Bush-like things. Heck of a good baseball and football team too. Take that Harvard and Columbia. Lou Gehrig must be spinning in his grave. Ike too.

Even when Ike was President of Columbia, most of the faculty scorned him as an inarticulte bumbler. When he left to run for President of the country, buttons and bumper stickers on campus proclaimed: "the nation's loss will be Columbia's gain."
