September 21, 2005MORE ABOUT AL QAEDA'S HARVARD PROFESSORThe Weekly Standard has additional information about al Qaeda on the Charles: Harvard's al Qaeda Apologist "After four long and bloody years of unresolved war, shouldn't America begin thinking about the possibility of an equitable diplomatic settlement with Osama bin Laden? Isn't it finally "Time to Talk to Al Qaeda?" So asks the headline on a Boston Globe op-ed piece published September 14. And so answers its author, Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou of Harvard University: Yes, he says. Let's make a deal. Bid Laden and his confederates are widely "misunderstood" in the United States, according to Mohamedou, associate director of Harvard's "Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research." We like to flatter ourselves that the war on terrorism is "an open-and-shut matter of good versus evil," but the truth is very different, he suggests. Al Qaeda is not, in fact, a totalitarian and "apocalyptic" movement; it is an "industrious" and "committed" rational actor pursuing "political" and "limited" objectives. And September 11 "was not an unprovoked, gratuitous act." Rather, the murder of 3,000 office workers in New York is best understood as a "trained commando" operation "in the context of a war that had twice been declared officially and publicly." And there being no realistic way for Americans to win such a war--against a "diffuse, ever-mutating, organized international militancy movement" enjoying "the rear-guard sympathy of large numbers of Muslims"--it becomes the better part of wisdom for us to seek a truce with al Qaeda in return for "some degree of satisfaction regarding its grievances." The Scrapbook knows what you're thinking here: There's a numbskull on the Harvard payroll. Been there, done that. But wait. There's more. This is new. This is worse. For it turns out that Dr. Mohamedou's Globe op-ed is merely the condensed version of "Non-Linearity of Engagement," a 30-page treatise he produced, on Harvard's dime, back in July. And "numbskull" doesn't begin to describe the thing. It seems that Harvard University's associate director of "humanitarian policy" and whatnot believes the United States should belatedly "acknowledg[e] the logic in which terrorism is used as a method of warfare, according to a principle of indiscrimination whose rationale is negation of the notion of innocence of the civilian population, and imputation of collective responsibility." As Osama bin Laden himself has observed, American foreign policy is effected by politicians whom Americans have freely elected. And in that respect, concludes our man in Cambridge, al Qaeda clearly claims "a valid jus ad bellum case" against any and every one of us--man, woman, or child. In the end, Mohamedou says, "these 'terrorists' are de facto combatants, and justice . . . is what they are after." Which is the true source of bin Laden's strength. And the reason that "no leading Muslim intellectual or scholar has denounced him." Not at Harvard, anyhow".

And yes, Hitler was misunderstood too. Adolf had a difficult childhood and it is indubitable that at least one Jew insultied, humiliated or out-achieved Herr Hitler. And follwing Dr.Mohamedou's logic Hitler this gives Hitler a free pass to wholesale executions, massacres of surrendered (disarmed) soldiers, murder and enslavement of POW's and civilians, mass murder, grand larceny etc. etc. etc. Bid Laden and his grisly gang his murder cult-that is the only way to describe them- are Extreme Nationalists, bigots, fanatics and homicidal maniacs. They are a disgrace to God and Islam and it should shame Godly men of Islam not to repudiate them. Every day they do not every day they acquiese they damn themselves in the eyes of a suffering humanity and before the judgment seat of God. Burke reminded us that "there is no safety for honest men but believing all possible evil by evil men." As I have written before, I think I DO UNDERSTAND Bin Laden. I think I understand perfectly his hatred for the corrupt and decadent West. I SHARE SOME OF HIS DISGUST WITH AMERICA AND THE WEST. I HAVE NEVER DENIED THIS. Though we may be disgusted and repelled and called to pass judgment on people at every turn A HIGHER TRUTH ASKS US TO PAUSE, TO PRAY AND TURN AWAY FROM SUCH FOLLY. Of all the things that are tenuously known in this world what could be MORE UNCERTAIN than a person's inner character or ULTIMATE CONTRIBUTION? Luke 6:37 reminds us to forgive and thus be forgiven. It reminds us not to judge to harshly so that we will not be judged too harshly. It asks us not to condemn so we are not condemned. I have found in my life QUIET PRAYER, ACCEPTANCE AND TOLERANCE is better than open confrontation. I am aware that so much of our perception is subject to delusion. We do our best -as Orwell recognized- to free ourselves from inbred or habitual prejudices or hates. We do our best to recognize value and sometimes by luck and by patience we hit the bull's eye. But not for long. We are sailors in a sea of shadow and uncertainity. I think we can have glimpses of truth but all too often we are short-sighted. I am at least aware, the way Bin Laden and other fanatics of the Right (he is a Rightist make no mistake) and the Left are not, that emotion and ideology are suffocating blankets and constricting blinders. There is truth and I know the truth will set me free. There is right and I know right will prevail over wrong. But I am just an able seaman in a great sea of turbulent waters.Windstorms may sweep the sea but I know there is a Star of Truth to follow and a Master to my ship, the winds and water. Luke 21:33 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." As the Highlander of old said, "IS FHEARR AN FHIRINN agus AN GLIOCAS NA N T-OR." "Truth and WISDOM ARE better THAN GOLD." There is a long clean road, I know, and a short dirty road. Bin Laden has chosen to live by the sword and take the short dirty road to power and glory. OMNIA EXEUNT IN MISTERIUM wrote the medieval churchman; ALL THINGS VANISH INTO MYSTERY. The truth is perhaps so intangible that it cannot be grasped. "My heart is like the river and your heart is like the sea." It is the highest wisdom, in my view, to leave some things, with all humility, to mystery. I know some things but I fear I may at times in my pride assert more than I know. Lao Tzu said "that which shrinks must first expand. That which becomes weak must first be strong. That which is cast down must first be raised. Those who are taken away from must first be given." Unlike Bin Laden and the Islamic Fundamentalists I believe in history. All points in our history are merely stages in the human drama. History is not merely written or pre-destined (I am not a Calvinist nor and Islamicist nor to I believe in Bible Codes). No, history is dymanic and subject to many forces and influences. The Greeks understood this conflict of forces and called it HUBRIS AND NEMISIS. The Hindus perceived this conflict and this need for balance as KARMA. Arrogance, violence, murder, theft, unjust domination and destruction are not the paths of glory, honor and success. Sooner or later they will be thrown down. Bin Laden will meet his NEMISIS, his maker and in the book of history his name will not be honored but reviled even by Muslims just as Stalin and Hitler are reviled. The difference is I am unhappy with certain trends and have GREAT FAITH that good will triumph over evil in big things and small things. Mistaken Sangerites will shriek and after a while will simply go the way of the Dodo bird. There are a lot of thing about the West -especially modern Europe- that I do no like. There are a lot of things about San Francisco and the West Coast I do not like. There are a lot of things about New York I do not like. But that does not make me want to murder and kill. Sometimes I feel jealousy, sometimes I feel that it is better to go along and have connections and money and that one man alone has no chance. But I know braggadocio and conspicuous consumption get very boring. Yes, I am a humble rural schoolmaster but when I do good I know I make a small contribution to the greater good. Nobody knows this, but my students know and God knows and this is reward enough. I try my best to help, to nurture and to create future learners and teachers and good citizens. I am certain of a few things and one of these is that I do more good for Islam than Bin Laden (I have had many Muslim students -male and female-and I treat their relgion, their Prophet and their customs- with great respect. I am not afraid nor reluctant to praise great teachers and lovers of God. Those who love God more than themselves. I Reject the bad of Islam but dwell on the postive. I encourage young Muslims to be good Americans and to divorce themselves from fruitless controversies and contentions that have nothing to do with their own present happiness and success. The best thing they can do for Islam is to be models of truth, humility, toleration and mercy. I do little in this world I suppose but I serve good not evil. That makes me and 100,000,000 more like me 100,000,000 times seven better than Bin Laden. Bin Laden is supposed to be a man of great faith and religiousity. He imagines himself, no doubt to be a True Believer of the True Faith. But I, who am more uncertain and more humble than Bil Laden, may -only God knows- have greater faith than Bin Laden. I believe good values will endure. I have a deep faith and a certain faith that some variety of my faith will endure. It does not bother me that Judaism or one or another of the 90,000 sects of Christianity is more truthful than my faith. In the shadow of THEIR TRUTH I glory in my association and hope to adjust to the wisdom and kindess and truth of others. Bin Laden despite his overt religiosity must have great doubt that his own retrograde faith can surival competition. I believe my faith CAN SURVIVE. I believe I can SURVIVE. I suffer in this life but I offer it up. I forgive. I try not to hate and put bitterness behind me. I am imperfect but thank God I am not Bin Laden. I would never shame my name and my faith and my line with such bestial savage cruelity. Al Qaeda IS A totalitarian and "apocalyptic" movement. It must be confronted ; it must be destroyed. Peopele like Dr. Mohamedou who appease such evil are co-conspirators. Appeasers in Harvard who say NOTHING while these new Copperheads cover-up for Murder Cultists and Terrorists will have to live with their shame and their impotence. 9/11 was, according to Dr.Mohamedou a great moment in Islamic MILITARY HISTORY. And Al Capone was a sharp businessman. The SS killed more that the US Marines in WWII so therefore they were the "best" military unit. The SS Special Action Groups were also called Commandos by Himmler. And they were so brave, so noble, so admirable -just like Bin Laden's suicide murder teams. Except for one thing. Pretending that mass murder is combat or "fine sport" is nothing more than feeble propaganda and a lite. Even the SS could not live with such a lie. AL Quaida DELENDA EST...Al Quaida must be destroyed. Bin Laden and all his ilk must be crushed. But we should not forget to trim our pride and embrace humility. When a society grows thoroughly selfish, corrupt and spiritually bankrupt iit sickens and dies. I remember reading Oliver Wendall Holmes -so praised by so many pragmatists and lawyers- and I was amazed by his selfishness, nihilism and ignorance IN SOME MATTERS. For example, he never married or had children because he thought the world was to wicked a place to bring children into. He was before Margaret Sanger a nihilist Sangerite. His law was a false god and encased in a shroud of death and the tomb of ritual. He was a brave man, an intelligent man but Holmes is not someone I would emulate. His body survived the Civil War but his heart did not. To me Holmes was entrapped in a profound ignorance not dissimilar to his friend Dewey. Neither man had much usefor spiritual concerns or relgion dimissing them as illusorty or weakminded. Virtues made us free and prosperous and Americans today are living off the wealth and efforts of a harder working and more virtuous and more prolific people. In other words, just as Hitler based his crimes and his platform on half-truths and partial truths, Bin Laden exculpates his crimes on the basis that we are a godless people begging for God's retribution. Bin Laden knows only one big thing : THAT HIS GOD IS GREAT. In that he is right: Except for the Lord the Watchman waketh in vain. But If I were Bin Laden I would doubt. Could God embrace such evil and such heartless, satanic, savage crimes? Or is it the Evil one he follows? How will we know? We will know any nation, any man, any woman, any faith by their fruits. Compare Saudia Arabia or Afghanistan of the Taliban with the USA. Which society is more persverse and more hypocritical ? The USA has many flaws but may in the end prove to be a nation of deeper virtues and faith than any Bin Laden admires. Bin Laden is a violent man and an evil man and like Hitler his friend and his inspiration and like Satan, his constant companion, he will die a violent death. Yes, he will die and this Mortal Storm of evil and death wil die with him. Bin Laden will not be remembered with Jesus or Plato or Aristotle or Washington or Jefferson or Hamiliton or Madison or Lincoln. He is, without knowing it, the greatest enemy of Islam of modern times, because he discredits Islam and shames Islam. Bin Laden will be remembered but only in infamy with Caligula, Ivan the Terrible, Hitler, Stalin, and Nero. The men and women remembered with honor will be the conquerors of Bin Laden and his Murder Cult. All honor to them....the saviors of of freedom and the makes of a future peace.
