It is sad but true Summers just wants to survive (he may be the last White Male President of Harvard) and that is why he bows before the god of Political Correctness and the Inquistors and Bean-Counters of the Liberal Inquisition.

You are right that Summer's behavior "amounts to an appalling portrait of unmanly personal weakness and the loss of honor."

And yes, the Presidency of Harvard IS worth all the humiliations and phoney apologies. At present Mr. Summers has molto honore and molto cantante that is to say perks and plenty of cash. If he were a real hero he would reestablish NROTC and ROTC at Harvard. Here was an institution that produced on average 100 officer candidates per year from 1941-until 1969. The true inequities are right there: it is rural America, heartland America which does the dirty work (mining in West Vriginia) AND which bears a disproportionate burden for the national defense.

Having lived in Washington, DC and New York City as well as London, Paris and Madrid it is clear to me that the Washington-NewYork-Boston elite (the Liberal Establishment) belong more to a transatlantic avant-guarde society than to America. After having seen Souix City, Iowa and talked to hundreds of middle American in rural Michigan, Utah, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, I was convinced that Kerry had absolutely no chance. Yet every single professor I knew at UVA (not a single one dared even clame to be a Republican) supported Kerry (a few very ardently) and then expressed dismay when the "idiot" Bush won by a landslide in the popular vote and in the electoral college -except of course in liberal elite enclaves on the West Coast and on the East Coast.

One thing the Liberal Establishment doesn't understand. The average Joe (and Jane) Roe don't go to Paris or Monte Carlo or the Riviera or Funchal (Madeira). So they don't care what the Europacifist hedonist elites say or do.

Of course, this doesn't mean the Republicans have a lock on virtue or victory. Republicans only win because the Democrats, saddled by bean counting and special interests, are unable to move towardsthe populist center. Until the Democrats win a majority of married women and white males of all varieites plus heavy pluralities of Hispanics they are doomed on a national level. The Liberal Inquisition with its doctrne of Postive Discrimination has its hands tied by an inflexible and intolerant ideology just like -oh the horror!- the Spanish Inquisition.

Recently an acquaintance -not yet 25- had her third chilld and is already 7 months pregnant with her fourth child. She was complaining vociferously about ACLU and the anti-religious , anti-family religious agenda. I remarked she had a case but PACIENCIA Y BARAJAR ESTIMADA AMIGA....PATIENCE as Cervantes wrote and SUFFLE THE DECK because she was living proof of the ROE EFFECT. Liberals emulate the European elites in their embrace of a culture of death (sexual suicide through a negative birth rate); conservatives -usually social and religious conservatives -have , on average three times as many children. Hence, if the Democrats do not radically reform themselves -and rid themselves of the stranglehold of special interests and quotas- they are doomed for the forseeable future on a national level. My young friend -who already has 16 nieces and nephews- smiled and said to me, "Old Munro, when you are right you are right. I will teach all my children to be pro-life and pro-family!"

These are the kind of people Summers and his ilk and Howard Dean know nothing about. When the same lady asks me about Stanford or Harvard or Yale I tell her frankly: "Don't kid yourself, those are ENEMY INSTITUTIONS. You are taking a great risk if you send you child there for undergraduate work. First read, I AM CHARLOTTE SIMMONS and then tell me what you think."

This is a new generation and they listen to Fox News and read the National Review on line. They are patriotic. They haves MANY friends and relatives serving in the armed forces. (one of my adult aides has TWO SONS serving in the Marine Corps both sergeants)

IF the Republicans don't wreck the economy (they may) and if they can win the war on terror ( I hope to God they do doesn't any sensible American?) middle class and lower middle class people -Red-blooded Americans of all ethnicities- will continue to reject Blue Nose America. But Summers craves the prestige and honor and emoluents Blue Nose America gives him so to keep his position he would debase himself. He lives in a world in which money and social position, not honor is what matters.
